TCDC( Thailand creative and design centre)

TCDC ( Thailand creative and design centre) is a small design center on the top floor of a shopping mall in Bangkok. They hold exhibitions for young and upcoming Thai creatives. They also have a massive design library which I am now a member of!!

900 Baht ( 18 pounds) for a 2 year membership with free access to wi fi internet ! bargain.

They have a great range of all kinds of design books, even books that aren't design related. They also have a great collection of journals and design mags.

I am intending on spending the rest of my summer there...I know its sad but I need to do some solid work and its a great place for me to do that....too many distractions at home.

At least over there even if I'm not working I will have to look like I am so it always results in me doing some useful web browsing anyways...

So....today I went to a pretty interesting exhibition called 'Spirits: creatives from beyond'

“Spirits: Creativities from beyond”

(Temporary Exhibition)
When 20 August - 21 November 2010 | 10:30-21:00
Where Gallery 2, Thailand Creative & Design Center

Fear is part of the human condition. It stirs the imagination and is a key component of the survival instinct.

Fear drives us to use our imagination to understand phenomena that our logic and the five senses are at a loss to explain. It is a source of many of the rules that bind society together, and it can be a source of inexhaustible wealth for the people of Thailand.

Join the search for the source and reason for our feelings of terror. Travel back through a very long history of countless attempts to conquer our fears. These attempts are “cultural artifacts” found at all strata of society. Today when traditional beliefs are wedded to modern technology, convenience, and specialized skills, the result is business from a “parallel world” with a tremendous profit potential.

Step inside a world where fear is the intangible cost of turning a riotous imagination into very real stories, images, and sounds – where nightmares become fiction, comic books, radio plays, and movies. Fear is the essential ingredient of an entertainment industry that can add just as much to the country’s economic output as any other part of the creative economy.

The exhibit concludes with some “haunting” thoughts from people who have managed to bridge the “spirit world” and the world of business, and with reflections from other individuals who have found creative ways to dealing with all the instinctual fears they just can’t shake.

sorry the writing's in Thai...

Thoughts on the exhibition.....

In general it was very interesting. The exhibition itself was quite well designed and well thought out. ( but not without its flaws) Thin black , ghostly patterned fabrics were used to separate each room giving a very effective atmosphere.

Different sections showed a different aspect of the effect these beliefs have on people, finacially, economically and in terms of people's lifestyles.

  1. Hey Sai!

Can non-members access the library as well? I'm visiting Bangkok this June and I really wanted to take a peek into the TCDC. :)
